GyroGear CEO, Joon Faii Ong, Aims to Help Tremor Patients with GyroGlove

London, UK: Dr. Joon Faii Ong, CEO of GyroGear and developer of GyroGlove, hopes to help 200 million tremor patients worldwide regain their freedom, dignity, and quality of life with GyroGlove.

Tremors can interfere with various daily activities, ranging from working and driving to eating and brushing your teeth. However, by adapting your attitude to tasks, you can keep your independence and continue many of your daily activities.

Essential tremor can appear to be similar to Parkinson’s disease at first. Essential tremor, on the other hand, is distinguishable from Parkinson’s disease because it occurs when your hands are in motion, such as when eating, drinking, or writing.

Managing stressful feelings and events is a crucial life skill for everyone, but it’s more important if you have essential tremor. While medicine and lifestyle adjustments might help moderate symptoms, stress, in particular, can quickly exacerbate the problem.

A 103-year-old woman in a London hospital was rapidly deteriorating. She was becoming frailer by the day and had lost much weight. Dr. Joon Faii Ong, a Medicine graduate then, was part of the team assigned to her care. He asked himself: “Was it an illness, something cancerous, or an undiscovered or unknown condition, they wondered?”

It became evident when Dr. Joon Faii Ong checked in on her over his lunch break. Her hand shakes had sent everything down her front after she had spent half an hour eating a single bowl of soup. Faii inquired about the nurses’ treatment for her tremors after they had cleaned her up. “Well, she’s 103, forgets you in five minutes, has those horrible shivers, and her medications have ceased working,” they said. “There isn’t much we can do.”

Dr. Joon Faii Ong was so frustrated by the lack of effective remedies that he decided to create his own. He realized that the same technique could be used to stabilize the hands after recalling his childhood gyroscope toys and their present applications in aviation and electronics. As a result, GyroGearTM and the GyroGloveTM were born.

Dr. Joon Faii Ong aspired to innovate at the crossroads of medicine, science, and bioengineering, drawing on his skills in all three sectors. He has built a reputation in medical device development and excelled in business, science, and engineering. Dr. Ong graduated from Imperial College London with a medical degree and a desire to work as a surgeon. He now works full-time as the CEO of GyroGear.

Dr. Joon Faii Ong founded GyroGear Ltd, a neuromuscular medical device firm, in 2016. It is the world’s only medical device company that uses mechanical gyroscopes. Dr. Ong and his team created the GyroGloveTM to aid millions of others in similar situations.

About GyroGear LTD: GyroGear is an interdisciplinary design, engineering, and medical team. The company, led by Dr. Faii Ong, developed the GyroGlove, a wearable gadget that mechanically stabilizes hand tremors. The GyroGear aims to help people with Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor regain their independence, dignity, and quality of life.
